2020.03.14 18:46 emcconnell11 Just finished "Console Wars" by Blake J. Harris, here's a quick review

Book Review: "Console Wars" by Blake J. Harris

"Console Wars", or its robust full title "Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo, and the Battle That Defined a Generation", documents the fourth generation of video game consoles through the eyes of Sega of America CEO Tom Kalinske, with occasional perspectives provided by Nintendo of America's Senior Vice President Howard Lincoln and Sony's Olaf Olafsson.

Overview

The book starts in 1990, after the home console crash of the early 80's and subsequent revival by Nintendo with the Famicom/NES in the late 80's. The book's main plot follows how Kalinske took the then unknown Sega from a 5% market share to 55% of the home console market through marketing the Genesis as an edgy, more adult video game console in-contrast to Nintendo's family friendly image. The book ends naturally as Kalinske steps down as the CEO for Sega of America shortly after the launch of the Sega Saturn.
"Console Wars" covers famous game industry moments: the launch of the Super NES, the creation of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sega's "Welcome to the Next Level" marketing campaign, development and abandonment of the mythical Super NES CD-ROM, the infamous Nintendo press conference where Nintendo backstabbed Sony by announcing an ill-fated partnership with Phillips, the launch of Mortal Kombat and Sonic 2, the launch of the Sega CD and it's controversial title Night Trap, the subsequent 1993 congressional hearings on video games ratings, the transition from CES to the creation of E3, Nintendo's development of the graphically groundbreaking Donkey Kong Country, the forgetful launch of the Sega 32X, the pivot by Sony from looking for partnerships with Nintendo and Sega to developing their own console and finally the downfall of Sega with the launch of the poorly received Sega Saturn.

Why You Should Read It

"Console Wars" gives a great glimpse into the history of the game industry written from the perspective of the players who were there.
The book is first and foremost a product marketing book. From an educational standpoint, it provides a great insight to the chaotic nature of product marketing back in the 90's and gives readers a look into how, almost purely through marketing, a failing brand was able to capture the majority share of a market. Although magazine and television ads are no longer the main avenue for brand management today, the overall sentiment and strategy Kalinske and team deployed remains effective.
Also, the book gives insight in how multi-national corporations think and why they make the decisions they make. The corporate cultural difference between Nintendo of America and Sega of America couldn't be more stark. Nintendo believes in something more than profits, shying away from violence and aggressive marketing, while Sega has a hunger to prove itself and succeed at all cost. The other culture clash is between Sega of America and Sega of Japan. The book paints Sega of America as the reason for the Genesis' success and Sega of Japan as the reason for Sega's downfall. Releasing the Sega CD and 32X too soon after the Genesis and refusing to partner with Sony on the Saturn, allowing the Playstation to dominate the fifth console generation, are all blamed on Sega of Japan's CEO Hayao Nakayama.
Finally, I believe in the value of studying the game industry's history to help guide its future. Understanding how and why the video game industry has arrived at this point in time is critical to avoiding similar missteps both Sega and Nintendo made in the future. I honestly wish there was a "Console Wars" written for each home console generation; I would read them all.

2019.12.04 18:09 Better_Call_Salsa “A New Way Forward” Bus Tour in Central and Eastern Iowa December 10-14

DES MOINES, IOWA — Andrew Yang is going on “A New Way Forward” Bus Tour in Central and Eastern Iowa December 10-14. He will be touring the Hawkeye State to continue to engage with everyday people across the political spectrum. During the bus tour, Andrew Yang will share his vision of a New Way Forward to put humanity first and what it will mean for every American. He will participate in public events in Des Moines, Grinnell, Burlington, Davenport, Cedar Rapids, Ames, Greater Waterloo, Dubuque, and Iowa City.
On the bus tour, by continuing to listen to and have conversations with voters across the state of Iowa, Andrew Yang will keep expanding the electorate, building a movement of everyday people across the political spectrum. The politically disengaged and disenfranchised voters; veterans and moms; clergy and the youth. Bringing these groups together is how he is going to shock the political establishment on February 3.
Last week, the campaign partnered with Iowa Rep. Ako Abdul-Samad to #PledgeforHumanity and challenge every Iowan to volunteer an hour of their time to help their community during the giving season. Andrew Yang shared his campaign's values and commitment to live them during recent events in Council Bluffs and Sioux City.
The bus tour is a strong indication of Andrew Yang's commitment in Iowa, where he continues to hire staff on the ground and expand infrastructure. Currently, the campaign has 13 field offices and continues to grow at a time when other campaigns are making cut backs or dropping out of the race.
The bus tour schedule is below. Credentialed media interested in covering one or multiple events must RSVP here.

2019.10.09 15:02 BrokenChairTrophy The $5 Bits of Broken Chair Trophy and r/CFB - A History Lesson

Perhaps you’ve heard of the Broken Chair Trophy, seen CFB members with the flair, but do you know your history? Gather ‘round, settle in, and listen up - it’s #ChairWeek - high time to make sure you respect this national treasure’s true roots.
Our story starts on November 20, 2014, when Goldy Gopher and Faux Pelini discuss a friendly wager on the outcome of the upcoming Minnesota v. Nebraska match-up.
At 10:34am on that fateful day, Goldy reaches out to CFB on Twitter to enlist the community’s help in designing a trophy. By 10:40am, a thread starts receiving responses with potential designs. User u/TopGoose registered an excellent early entry, but it was clear that by 11:53am Twitter account @korkedbats had submitted a design that would become the standard by which the trophy was constructed.
At 10:16pm that evening, Goldy was already hard at work building the first trophy, and at 8:42am the next day unleashed the completed product in all its glory upon the internet.
We’re talking in less than 24 hours, Goldy, Faux, and the CFB community had banded together to create a new college football trophy, and in a little over 48 hours from the initial interaction between Faux and Goldy, the trophy was being hoisted by Minnesota players in Lincoln, NE, as they celebrated a 28-24 victory.
What a storybook ending, right!? Immediately embraced by both schools into the rich pantheon of B1G trophies, Nebraska was officially part of the group… Not so fast, my friend! After acquiring the trophy the following year in a 48-25 victory, the Nebraska squad took it back to Lincoln. Coach Riley even kindly posed with the trophy for Nebraska’s official Twitter account. It wasn’t until Nebraska won the 2016 game that the horrible truth was revealed - the Universities collectively “lost” the trophy.
If the Universities wanted to plot the trophy’s demise, they made a fatal error by “losing” it, cementing its place in history with a classic case of B1G trophy origin lore. Many of us were pretty disappointed, some of us were plain pissed off. User u/hunterschuler went so far as to submit a FOIA request to the University of Nebraska in an attempt to find the trophy, but to no avail.
In the off-season, CFB press asked around about the trophy at B1G media days, eliciting responses from players like Minnesota’s Rodney Smith. At the same time, a group of Nebraska Redditors and CFB regulars were plotting the return of the trophy over at Huskers. Users u/andrewsmd87, u/DarthFlutteshy_, u/Greizen_bregen, and u/xAIRGUITARISTx collectively drew up plans, built a trophy, and started reaching out to contacts at the University of Nebraska regarding the trophy’s return - u/K_multiplied-by_K provided, in his words, "the (very shitty) dollar bills underneath the trophy." Minnesota fan and Redditor u/DoctorCalMeacham reached out to the CFB mod team after hearing about the efforts by Nebraska fans to bring the trophy back, and was connected to the Husker group by u/Honestly_, who had a hand in the initial interactions between the original trophy creators. Add in a couple of non-Redditing Minnesotans and the trophy had a team ready to make things happen. The trophy was back for the 2017 game thanks in large part to the CFB community, it's been hosted by Minnesota and Nebraska organizations the past two years, and it’s not going away any time soon.
~INTERLUDE~
You might know the rest of the story, and of course I encourage you to keep reading about our fundraising efforts. The point here is, never doubt the power of community whether online or in your city or wherever. The trophy wouldn’t exist without CFB, it wouldn’t have been reborn without CFB, and it won’t live on without CFB - also meaningful to us personally, Team Chair wouldn’t know each other or all of you without this place. So… THANK YOU for your support of all things CHAIR.
~INTERLUDE~
Building on the friendly nature of the trophy’s origins, Team Chair started a fundraiser in conjunction with the return of the trophy that is now in its third year. In the first two years of fundraising $18,800 has been donated to support organizations connected to the University of Nebraska and the University of Minnesota. The Team Jack Foundation was chosen due to its close ties with Nebraska Football - everyone remembers Jack Hoffman scoring a 69 yard touchdown in the 2013 spring game; we’re thrilled to report that Jack played his first football game this year. You may have caught a recent College GameDay story on Gopher Football player Casey O’Brien, who has also battled cancer. He has been treated at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital in the past, a place where Gopher players often spend time meeting with patients, and the chosen Minnesota partner organization for our fundraising efforts.
So what now? DONATE, get your employer to match your donation, share on Twitter and whatnot. Seriously, please, it would make us feel real good, and it would probably make you feel pretty good too. What does the future hold for the trophy? We don’t know. Pretty clear the Universities don’t want it right now, but you never know. Maybe that’s just not the point of this whole thing, you know? Maybe it’s meant to live on simply as Rece Davis calls it "the greatest unsanctioned trophy in the history of sports," doing honorable workmanlike things such as raising funds for people in need. A true trophy of the people, of CFB.

2019.08.19 16:25 closingbelle Patricia Webb - one of Nebraska's oldest and coldest

Oscar Fiene was expecting to run an errand, do a few chores on one mild, foggy Saturday in April 1974.
Just east of Hallam, off 55H, he was stopping by one of his properties to feed some cattle. The property had been vacant for some time, and the cattle were meant to be the only tenets. As he moved around the farm, seeing to the late breakfast for his livestock, he spotted something at the bottom of a haystack that he was sifting out for cud. Something that was neither man nor beast. Something blue...
As he moved around, pulling loose hay from the bundle, he was feeling more anxious, while still trying to maintain feeble hope that someone had a perfectly reasonable explanation for putting something blue in a haystack. His haystack. On his vacant property.
Unfortunately, Oscar Fiene had no such lucky break. Once he circled and took a closer look at the far side, he was confronted by a horrific sight. Buried hastily in and partially under the grain, he could see a blue jacket sleeve and an almost imperceptible patch of human thigh...

Twenty-four year old Patricia Carol Webb was discovered nude under that haystack, on that vacant farm, just east of Hallam, Nebraska on April 20th,1974. The only clothing on or near her was a jacket with the blue sleeve that had been poking out. It was a limited quantity product, a quilted jacket, one of only 143 extra-large jackets distributed by a local feed mill. These jackets were given to loyal customers, some were sold to employees. That jacket, identifiable as coming from such a small batch, was the only clothing found at the site of her remains. Webb also had a piece of tape over her mouth. She had been shot numerous times by more than one caliber of bullet, .22 and .25.
Her brutal murder remains one of Lincoln’s greatest murder mysteries. It's been unsolved for over 38 years.
The investigation was a top priority, initially. It was worked by the FBI and various other state and local agencies. The reason for all this extra attention and focus becomes clear, when the details of Patricia's abduction are taken into account.
From the Lincoln Nebraska Journal-Star:
A new employee of the Adult Book and Cinema Store disappeared overnight April 18, 1974, along with 51 bondage-themed adult magazines, a calculator and $30. A cord leading to an extension from a pay phone had been cut and the shop door left unlocked.
Given the circumstances surrounding her disappearance, it seemed that there were only a few possible solutions to unraveling the murder, at least initially. One of the most obvious was that this an attack by a lone sexual sadist. Except there was no sign of sexual assault or rape. Her clothing was never found, and her purse was discovered in a drainage ditch about a mile and a half away from where her body was discovered. Then police had a new theory.
One of the investigating officers, Lincoln Police Sgt. Larry Barksdale suspected that "there were two killers and that they moved the body, because little blood was found nearby."
The most recent in-depth article had more details about the potential witnesses at the time, but unfortunately none of those leads were sufficient to catch the killer. Or killers.
Witnesses came forward to say they saw a young woman leave the store with a black man at about 1 a.m. April 18 and get into a large, older car that looked like a boxy Cadillac or Buick and may have had another person inside.
Police developed two strong suspects, a man matching the description that witnesses gave and his partner, a white man, but they couldn't definitively connect them to the slaying.
In one article Patricia's body is described as "bullet-riddled" or "bullet-ridden", suggesting that numerous shots were fired into body, possibly long after she had passed away. That lead to a new theory that narrowed the focus of the investigation: this was overkill for a perceived personal injury or revenge. Investigators believed the .22s were fired from a rifle, most likely a Mossberg, and the .25s from a semi-automatic handgun like a Beretta Panther 418 or Tulski Korovin. Sgt. Barksdale commented, “To me, it has always had the makings of an execution."

In such cases it can be easy to forget the details that matter, such as Patricia loved roller skating. She had been married and divorced. She'd dabbled in college and seemed genuinely happy and popular. She also worked as a police informant...
Larry Ball of Lincoln was an investigator for the State Patrol when Webb was a “special employee” for it. He said in a 1990 interview that she and another undercover informant played key roles in late 1973 and early 1974, setting up 60 or 70 undercover drug buys leading to the arrests and convictions of more than two dozen people.
She stopped the undercover work in early 1974 and wanted to start again, but she owed $3,000 to $4,000 to finance companies, Ball said.
“We told her that she couldn't work for us until she got those bills straightened out.”
“This case has been investigated, reinvestigated, reinvestigated. A lot of effort put into it,” said Lincoln Police Sgt. Larry Barksdale, who was tasked with the investigation since the early 1990s. Barksdale retired in 2012, but the case remains open. Together, Lincoln police, the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, Nebraska State Patrol and FBI logged nearly 15,000 man hours during the first year alone. They even consulted clairvoyants.
Sgt. Barksdale also lead the investigation during the most recent review from 2007-2009 where evidence was reexamined with modern methods. Investigators went back into the files, combing old evidence for DNA and prints, largely due to grants of federal money, specifically designated for the reinvestigation of cold cases.
Sgt. Barksdale unfortunately concluded, “We didn’t get anything.”

There did seem to be one possible link that isn't mentioned much in the more recent reports. Apparently, at one point, there was a composite drawing of the Webb suspect. From the June 9, 1975 Columbus Telegram:
sourced by u/ms_tyree
LINCOLN, Neb. (UPI) - Police continued their investigation into the Friday slaying of a Lincoln woman and were checking the possibility of a link with a similar fatal shooting a year ago involving a former undercover drug agent. Police said they were also investigating a possible connection betweeen Friday's incident in Lincoln and the robbery of an Omaha service station a week earlier. Killed Friday with three shots to the head was Mrs. Marianne Mitzner, manager of the Mitzner Rare Coin Co. store. Her body was found bound and gagged by her 12-year-old son, Monte, a seventh grader. Patricia Webb, 24, Lincoln, was found dead of gunshot wounded April 20, 1974, on a farm near Hallam. Police said the two slayings pose... similarities that were being investigated. Police said a composite drawing of a suspect in the Webb murder resembles that of a man seen twice in the Mitzner coin shop prior to Friday's killing. Mrs. Mitzner's husband, Kenneth, 51, may be released from the Lancaster County- Lincoln Jail to attend his wife's funeral and care for his son, Monte, who has been staying with relatives since... shooting. U.S. District Judge Robert Denney said an attorney for the county public defender's office will ask in his court Monday in Omaha that Mitzner be released immediately. Milzner is serving a four- month sentence in the city jail here for receiving and selling stolen coins across interstate lines, a federal offense. He began serving the sentence June 1. Denney said that if Mitzner was released, he would still pay a fine handed down with the 1 original sentence. Police said they were not considering robbery as the sole motive in the Mitzner slaying case, despite the disappearance of about $10,000 worth of merchandise from the store.
We have no way of knowing the accuracy or even the validity of that composite, but it does seem odd that it has somehow been lost, or deemed unfit. Eyewitness testimony can often be incorrect. Unfortunately, this part of the case, such as the accuracy of the sketch, or whether the witness is still alive remains unknown. Lost to the pages of history. This case was complicated from the beginning, and as the investigation moved deeper into Patricia's life, the motivations for the crime became even more obscured. Was it a drug dealer getting revenge? Was it a serial killer? Was it just bad luck or was it carefully planned? Was it an execution as Sgt. Barksdale felt it was?
Hopefully future advances in technology will help Patricia Carol Webb get justice. She is survived by her father, who remains in the local area to this day.

Edit: This post has been added to the sidebar under “List of businesses and persons to avoid who financially contributed to 788 is not medical” for future viewing and reference.
The following are a list of businesses and persons who contributed money to the “788 Is Not Medical” campaign. The source is the Oklahoma Ethics Commission In State Political Action Committee Contributions and Expenditure Report. For a more detailed list of the source, click here
This is public record. This subreddit in no way condones harassment of persons or businesses, this is simply a tool to help you make informed decisions on what businesses and persons to give your business to. Many of these places are unavoidable, Cox is generally the best internet in town and I personally am not giving up my Thunder tickets because Chesapeakes name is on the building (though the state owns the building) but I did close my bank account at first fidelity bank and am going to make an effort to avoid the mentioned gas stations as well as making a mental note of where and who stood in the way of 788 so that I can spend my money elsewhere.

These are the people continuing to lobby against 788 as written, these are some heavy hitters in the Oklahoma business community and while we should be proud we contributed to a grass roots (no pun intended) campaign that overcame all that money and influence, the fight is not over.

2018.07.08 23:00 Shadrich SpaceX - A Primer

By popular demand here is my SpaceX post. SpaceX is very different from Tesla, it's a private company that only deals with government and corporations and yet has a high public profile and popular following. This post is meant to give deep background and context to what SpaceX does and the environment and conditions in which it functions. The post is divided into (almost independent) sections with a summary at the end of each one for ease of reading, enjoy.

U.S. Government Industrial Policy

The US government is infamous for its lack of long-term strategic vision due to democratically elected representatives who loathe spending money on anything that can't be explained to the voters and presidents who hate projects that take more than term limits to complete. Because of this the US suffered many embarrassments in its history: neglecting its navy after the War of 1812, neglecting its army after WWI, neglecting rocketry after WWII, etc.
The US is also endowed with a great and very productive economy which enable it to channel vast sums of money and resources at any problem and solve it in record time and even overtake its counterparts. The method the US government has chosen to execute this since WWI is to give huge contracts to capable companies, these contracts would finance the R&D of the technology, the capital expenditure on plant and equipment and the production cost of the product itself plus profits for the company of course.
The owners of the company that is awarded the contract get to keep the plant, the designs, the patents and sell the product to third parties and since the US government kindly financed the R&D and capital expenditure on plants and equipment their product is highly competitive and is exported to many countries or sold to the public if there is a civilian use for it. That's how the US fostered and supported its corporations since WWI.
I will give one example from WWI: The Linclon Motor Company, Henry Leland was one of the founders of the Cadillac Automobile Company, left that company to manufacture engines for the government during WWI. He got a $10,000,000 contract (in 1917 money!) to build the Liberty V12 aircraft engine a design that was owned by the US government (up to the end of WWII the US would take ownership of the design if they financed it); the contract was only to manufacture it (they gave manufacturing contracts to several companies, not only him), he then built the Lincoln Motor Company Plant to assemble it from parts sourced from other companies, producing 6,500 engines. Afterwards he retooled and produced the Lincoln L-Series. The US government basically gifted him a factory.
This method greatly expanded in WWII and afterwards with the US government paying basically for everything from the basic science research (via public universities, National Science Foundation, etc), the early R&D, testing and finally the actual cost of production and the company gets to keep all the technology and tools and sell the product to third-parties and keep all the profits. All this is documented in public records, this gifting of millions of dollars from the public purse is not a secret. This is true for every jet fighter, bomber, tank, gun, computer, satellite—and as we shall see below—space rocket the US government buys.
In Summary: The US government fully finances the development of new technologies, the plants to build them, then buys the products and gifts the rest to the corporation. It might resemble feudalism more than capitalism with the king/government giving out land/money to their retainers for services rendered, but it is the reality of the US today.

The U.S. Lags Behind, Again!

When the Soviet Union launched Sputnik the shock of discovering that the US now lags behind was so big the moment has become a proverb: A Sputnik Moment. The US poured money into rocketry in an effort to catch up but the Soviet Union kept getting all the records: first orbit, first animal, first man, first woman, first spacewalk. Of course the US response was to pour so much money into such an “impossible” goal that it would overshadow the Soviet Union: it built the mighty Saturn V and put a man on the Moon, the space race was settled.
Although the space race was settled life went on after the Apollo program achieved its goal and the US chose to build a revolutionary Space Shuttle using liquid hydrogen engines that take off once a week and can be re-used many times, the shuttle would have sustained an eventual orbital station but the reality was it consumed so much resources that no development was done on the eventual station to be serviced.
The Soviet Union chose to build simple space stations using the existing technology, the cosmonauts would take off in orbiters not so different from Vostok 1 (Yuri Gagarin's orbiter) in its conception on a variant of the R-7 rocket that was used in that first mission. All of the Soviet (first stage) engines used kerosene similar to the mighty Saturn V's first stage, using the more powerful liquid hydrogen was too expensive and technically demanding for a Soviet Union less than 15 years from desolation.
The Space Shuttle turned into a strategic failure: re-usability was minimal as the shuttle needed solid-fuel boosters to get into orbit and major refurbishment to reuse the engines. It would launch twice or three times in a year instead of once per week and although the number of US astronauts increased dramatically in the 80's the reality was most of them were staying about a week in orbit. The Soviet Union incrementally developing their technology and sticking with the kerosene engines had a series of space stations in orbit then in 1986 started building the world's first modular space station (another first!)--and the direct predecessor of the International Space Station (ISS)--the: Mir Space Station
The US got lucky and instead of catching up it benefited from the desolation of the Soviet Union and became a partner in the Mir program, re-learning what was lost since Skylab (the US space station launched by the mighty Saturn V), it was able to dock the shuttle to Mir, US astronauts spent time in a space station and work started on ISS, which was built on the Russian core module Zvezda an incremental development from Mir and without it ISS would not have been possible.
This luck would actually make the US complacent and they would concentrate on the more glamours aspects of space while depending on the Russians for the mundane, their famous lack of strategic vision would strike again: the lifetime of the Space Shuttle nearing its end without a viable rocket to supply the US part of ISS or even put astronauts to orbit.
At the same time commercial satellites were becoming a boom business but the two main companies with rockets to launch them, Boeing & Lockheed Martin, combined in 2006, into a single company called ULA: United Launch Alliance. Lucrative government (Pentagon & NASA) contracts and no other competitor would make ULA an exclusive government contractor uninterested in competing against low-cost commercial launchers, namely: Europe, Russia, China and India. ULA even sources the first stage kerosene engine for the Atlas V rocket from Russia, as long as the US government is paying why not source a reliable Russian engine and bill the government for it.
The realization that the US lacked rockets to service the manned space program and compete in the commercial market was another Sputnik moment, it spurred the government into another spending spree to catch up, a spending spree that would benefit anyone who had the vision to develop a low-cost kerosene engine, in the next section we'll meet such visionary.
In Summary: By 2005 the US was facing the reality of the Space Shuttle retirement without a replacement launcher to send astronauts to ISS or a supply spacecraft to supply them there. At the same time it became apparent that commercial rocket launching is booming and the US did not have a single viable provider.

A Brilliant Engineer and the Merlin

Tom Mueller: is the son of a logger who himself worked at logging to pay for his education, eventually obtaining a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering he worked for TWR, an automotive and aerospace conglomerate, and was the lead on the liquid hydrogen TR-106 rocket engine. one of the most powerful engines ever built. This engine used a pintle injector: a device that was developed (by a TWR division) for the Apollo program which was of course funded by NASA, we shall see the same device later.
This man's ingenuity and achievement is what gave the US a chance to get into the commercial rocket launches that had been dominated by Europe, Russia and newcomers: China and India. Since he is the specialist in rocket engines, here is a good place to discuss them.
Liquid fuel engines are conceptually very easy and they have changed very little since the first operational rocket: the German V-2. Such a rocket has two tanks containing an oxidizer, usually liquid oxygen, and fuel; the two are mixed under pressure in a burning chamber then the resulting gas exit through a nozzle that force it into supersonic speeds.
Oxygen liquefies at −182.96 degree C and in case of an emergency it can simply be vented into the atmosphere which is already 20% oxygen by composition. The problem of liquid fuel engines is in the fuel part.
The Germans used ethanol (alcohol) for the V-2 which is liquid at normal conditions. The Soviet Union used kerosene for its space program rockets (the vital first stage and not necessary all stages). The US also used kerosene in the mighty Saturn V first stage. The type used in rockets, called RP-1, is a highly refined type of kerosene which is liquid at normal conditions.
Kerosene has more energy than ethanol per unit of weight: 46 vs 29 MJ/kg, but it is dwarfed by hydrogen at 141 MJ/kg (source). Thus using hydrogen “releases more energy per unit mass during combustion, enabling a higher exhaust velocity ” as Wikipedia explains.
The problem of hydrogen is that unlike kerosene it is a gas that needs to be liquefied and at normal conditions it is about 70 degrees colder than liquid oxygen: −252.87 vs −182.96 degree C and if anything goes wrong or the launch is scrapped the liquid hydrogen can not be vented into the atmosphere and has to be pumped out of the rocket and processed. This is the fuel chosen by NASA for the Space Shuttle, which was supposed to launch on a weekly basis: a volatile cryogenic highly explosive expensive gas abandoning the cheap reliable liquid fuel that was the standard.
The liquid hydrogen engine is a sport car, an Arabian horse, the gold-plated high-tech rocket engine that only the government can afford and the US discovered too late that commercial payloads are better handled by cheaper rockets; what was needed was a kerosene engine, that is the SUV, the workhorse, the reliable over-engineered (no pun intended) engine that took man to space first and then to the Moon.
By 2001 the US had no kerosene engine in development, that's when a brilliant engineer, Tom Mueller, would start developing one in a garage, he of course did not invent anything new he basically made an engine similar to the Saturn V first stage engine. I have no knowledge about that engine's design but one would think it was similar to what he has done before, I also have no knowledge how much of that engine would go into the Merlin but since the Falcon 1 would launch only 4 years after SpaceX founding with a Merlin and a vacuum-optimized stripped-down version called the Kestrel, I think it's safe to assume the garage engine was developed into the Merlin, maybe they only differ in material and production based design.
What we do know is that the Merlin uses a pintle injector, that Apollo program technology used in TWR's TR-106 under Mueller's lead; I think it is safe to assume, although we can't know for sure, that his garage engine also had a pintle. This and many other developments funded by the vast sums invested by the government is what made it possible for a private company in 2002 to build a rocket engine. It's very easy to climb a mountain specially if you ride to the top on a government-funded helicopter.
As to the beating heart of an engine that would be the turbopump: anyone can connect a tank of oxygen with a tank of kerosene and funnel the fire out of a nozzle, but that won't get you a rocket engine, at best you'll end up with a novelty flamethrower; what makes the engine is the turbopump that pumps the two elements and force them to combine and exit under high pressure generating thrust. The turbopump in the first Merlin engines was designed and produced by Barber-Nichols, if there is anything remarkable about it then it was kept out of the Media, as far as I can see it's just a bespoke turbopump.
A classic design, technology developed by NASA, critical components sourced from established suppliers that is, in summary, the Merlin engine, nothing revolutionary nothing extraordinary. Indeed two different US rocket companies buy similar engines from Russia, but then headlines like: “Inside SpaceX’s Revolutionary Merlin Engines That Could Take Us to Mars” get published without explaining what is so “revolutionary” about it, indeed the word “revolution” is not mentioned once in the body of that article. This kind of hyperbolic claims has been the norm for SpaceX coverage which greatly skews the context (plus the Merlin is not even the engine SpaceX intends to use for Mars).
As to Mueller I am not really surprised that not many people have heard of this man, not only is the Media not interested in him (the above cited article doesn't mention him for example) but even on Wikipedia his role is not given its due: he is mentioned once on History of SpaceX in a context that make it seem he was recruited to work in his specialty: “In early 2002 Musk was seeking staff for the new company and approached rocket engineer Tom Mueller,” when in reality Musk went to see his garage engine and Mueller basically co-founded SpaceX with his engine to Musk's money. He is mentioned once on the Merlin engine family in a context of a statement he made in 2015 and nothing about his early work or the fact that he is the chief designer of the whole family!
Mueller seems to be very happy having achieved success and either he does not seek the limelight or can live with the fact that only people in the business know his name. One would expect that Mueller who holds a Masters degree, who have experience in designing and building rocket engines, who built the most valuable thing SpaceX has, namely the Merlin engine would be SpaceX Chief Technology Officer but it seems Musk who has a Bachelor in Physics and a degree in Economic from a business school and became a businessman is more suited to being SpaceX CTO while Mueller is given the very specific title of “Chief Technology Officer of Propulsion.”
In Summary: Mueller is a brilliant engineer who started the development of a kerosene engine in a garage which later became the Merlin engine, he co-founded SpaceX and is doing a great job developing engines for its rockets.

A Brilliant Executive

Gwynne Shotwell : the daughter of a surgeon she obtained, with honors, a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mathematics; she worked at The Aerospace Corporation: a nonprofit corporation that operates a federally funded research and development center providing technical guidance and advice on all aspects of space missions to military, civil, and commercial customers.
In 1998 Shotwell left to become director of the space systems division at Microcosm Inc. a company that does “space mission engineering [for] commercial, military, and scientific missions from small, low-cost programs to multi-billion dollar, multi-satellite constellations and a family of launch vehicles.”
After four years at Microcosm Shotwell joined SpaceX in the year of its founding, she was its eleventh employee, as vice president of business development with a seat on the SpaceX board of directors. Today she is the President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of SpaceX, I can't date exactly when she got that position but her role in making SpaceX what it is today is undisputed as one article puts it: “[she] played a crucial role in the $2 billion contract with NASA, ensuring a healthy turnaround when the company was down and out in 2008.” - we will discuss in detail the 2008 events in the next section.
As with Mueller she lives in the shadow of Musk who hugs all the limelight, on the SpaceX Wikipedia page she is mentioned only once: in the company infobox and otherwise only in the titles of articles in the sources section as one would expect; for who is better to inform the public than the President and COO who is actually in the offices every day instead the Wikipedia article (reflecting the general Media) make it seem as if SpaceX is run by its celebrity CEO who is also the CEO of an automotive company, a tunnel digging company, who opened a private school for his children, who constantly giving presentations and a daily twitter user.
Shotwell's profile is much higher than Mueller, partly because her position is higher and because the Media love the story of a woman leading a tech company. She seem just as happy as Mueller and accepting whatever working with Musk entails—from Mars missions to overshadowing her—because for her personally heading a company like SpaceX was probably not even something she dreamed of doing when working at Microcosm.
In Summary: The President & COO of SpaceX is a brilliant executive with exactly the right educational background, the right experience with government and space companies to lead SpaceX and she has done an incredible job and achieved great success.

The Falcon 1

In the late 1950's NACA (the predecessor of NASA) designed the SCOUT rocket using existing military rockets combined to form a multi-stage solid fuel rocket capable of launching small satellites into Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The SCOUT rocket family were very successful: used from 1961 to 1994.
In 2002 SpaceX started the development of the Falcon 1 a two-stage liquid fuel rocket with a single Merlin in the first stage and a single Kestrel in the second. The payload was similar to the SCOUT rocket successfully developed 45 years before and yet despite all the accumulated knowledge, improvement in tools and materials, the use of existing parts for the engines and the rocket, the Falcon 1 failed 3 out of its five launches.
The firs three were all failures; the first successful launch was in September 2008 carrying a test load but by the end of 2008 SpaceX had run out of funds and was still to launch a useful payload and with only one contract (a 180 kg satellite in LEO) the company was going into Christmas facing bankruptcy.
SpaceX ambition for the Falcon 1 was to be a testbed for the technology and also provide financing to continue developing a larger rocket and a supply spacecraft for ISS. The Falcon 1 was built with private funds without government contract or a guarantee but as we shall see below all private-funded development amounted to no more than showing NASA that they are credible and can be awarded a contract similar to other established contractors (this is not unique to SpaceX most contractors spend their capital proving to the government they can do the job and not actually developing anything commercially useful).
Developing a small rocket that can put a small payloads into LEO in the hope of turning that into a profitable operation that funds the rest of the company turned out to be a failure. We shall see in the next section how SpaceX became a success.
In Summary: Building on technology developed by the US government in the 1960's and with the use of modern materials, computers and design processes SpaceX managed to almost bankrupt itself developing a rocket on par with a 45 year old vehicle.

The Falcon 9 and the Dragon

In this section we can read our story in NASA Inspector General report (PDF) about the supply contracts for ISS (I told you everything is in public records), I will be quoting from it below, labeled: IG report.
The Dragon supply spacecraft and its rocket the Falcon 9 were started in 2006 funded by NASA: “Between 2006 and 2008, NASA entered into a series of funded agreements with Orbital ATK and SpaceX to stimulate U.S. commercial development of transportation systems capable of providing cargo delivery services to the ISS.... Orbital ATK and SpaceX ultimately contributed more than 50 percent of the development costs of their respective spaceflight systems while receiving more than $700 million from NASA...” - (IG report, emphasis added).
At the end of 2008 the company was heading towards bankruptcy, As ArsTechnica puts it : “the company appeared poised to go bankrupt as it struggled to meet payroll in late 2008. Even as its cash ran out, SpaceX was in the midst of capital-intensive transition from the single-engine Falcon 1 rocket to the much more complex Falcon 9 rocket.”
The Market has spoken: SpaceX is a loser. Fortunately for SpaceX the US government was in the business of choosing winners and losers and realizing that the US had no way to supply ISS and they would have to depend on the Russians for both the launching of astronauts and supply they decided to open their purse and “In 2008, while development efforts were still underway, NASA awarded fixed-price contracts with task orders initially valued at $1.9 billion and $1.6 billion to Orbital ATK and SpaceX, respectively, for 20 cargo resupply missions to the ISS through 2016” - (IG report, emphasis added)
Orbital ATK would develop the Cygnus supply craft and launch it on the Antares rocket using a Russian-made kerosene engine (first launch 2013) while SpaceX would finish developing the Dragon supply craft and launch it on the Falcon 9 using US-made kerosene engine (first launch 2010). The Falcon 1 was quickly retired after fulfilling that single contract, even though SpaceX was four years from the Falcon 9 first launch; clearly there was no profit to be made from it and it was nothing but a technology demonstrator.
This contract saved SpaceX or as ArsTechnica puts it: “Without NASA there would be no SpaceX” nor would there be Cygnus spacecraft or ISS or Saturn V or a moon landing and without the US deep pockets there wouldn't be an Internet or a national highway connecting the US or a transcontinental railway or even the Panama canal. Still people think that SpaceX has developed space rockets and spacecrafts for a few hundred million dollars of private funding!
The contract would be extended to “a total of 31 missions...worth $5.9 billion, or an average cost of $191.3 million per mission” (IG report, emphasis added). SpaceX has launched the 15th supply mission in June 2018, While Orbital ATK launched the ninth in May 2018; leaving 7 more supply missions under the extended 2008 contract.
The cost per launch for the Falcon 9 is advertised as $62 million and yet NASA pays $191 million, does the Dragon costs $130 million or does the Cygnus mission cost several hundred millions skewing the average, or maybe SpaceX is selling cheap commercial launches because the average cost in the report includes the development money while the $61 million is the cost of manufacturing and launching only?
We have no way of knowing the true total economic cost of a Falcon 9 launch, but if I am right then NASA has helped SpaceX reduce the cost of commercial launches, this is actually the justification of the US industrial policy of generous give outs: it brings the prices down for corporations and individuals. Unfortunately SpaceX, and the Media, has fostered the illusion that all of this was done with “private” funding and it proves that private companies can have a space program surpassing that of NASA, the main benefactor of SpaceX!
SpaceX claimed in 2014 that NASA provided $396 million towards the development of the Dragon and the Falcon 9 (shouldn't NASA own part of the IP then?) and SpaceX provided $450 million, but the total funding rounds of SpaceX up to 2014 was $258.4 million (source) which mostly funded the development of the Merlin and the Falcon 1. The big funding round was in 2015 when lead investor Google bet big on the company after the success of the Falcon 9/Dragon resupply missions.
So how could SpaceX a company that was only funded to the tune of $260 million contribute $450 million to the development of the Dragon/Falcon 9? Well my theory (and it is impossible to know exactly) is that as the contract given to them by NASA was guaranteed (press release on SpaceX website) all they had to do is walk to the nearest bank and show that they can fulfill the contract and the bank would discount the contract's value the same way bills are discounted, the more probable SpaceX can fulfill it the more cash they get. Guaranteed government contracts are like bonds and it's easier for NASA to guarantee contracts and let the banks finance the project than paying cash from the annual budget, so in my opinion the funding provided by SpaceX was predicated on getting the guaranteed contracts in the first place.
In 2016 when both companies had operational vehicles NASA issued a new contract for supplying ISS, but now the companies were only guaranteed 6 missions each (IG report). Having stood both suppliers up by funding and guaranteed contracts NASA now has a more familiar customesupplier relations with them (a third company, Sierra Nevada, was also awarded a contract but is yet to launch).
This is how the US functions, they chose winners and losers they have been doing it for a long time now. SpaceX is not the first and will not be the last, it's not the biggest nor the smallest, it's not doing the worst job nor is it doing something revolutionary, as another headline claims the Dragon is revolutionary. The only new thing the Dragon has done is to be re-used (after refurbishment) but actually the Space Shuttle was a (very big and expensive) supply craft that was used multiple times.
SpaceX is just one of two US companies supplying ISS sharing the honor with the Russian Progress supply craft, both the European and Japanese have domestically designed and built supply spacecrafts, the European one is retired and the Japanese is launching in August 2018. China has its own supply spacecraft based on the design of Progress (which they bought from the Russians) and has been launched and fully tested. Of all the supply spacecrafts the Russian Progress has the most launches (157 missions to ISS to the Dragon's 15), being in use since 1978 when it supplied Salyut 6 and being continually developed and improved, it has supplied both Mir space station and ISS and is still in use.
In Summary: The $1.6 billion NASA contract at the end of 2008 to resupply ISS saved SpaceX from possible bankruptcy and financed both the development of The Falcon 9 and the Dragon capsule. SpaceX resupply of ISS is a routine operation it shares with Orbital ATK and the Russian space agency. The Falcon 9 is a typical working-horse launch rocket with no exceptional features.

Landing Used First Stage

Landing a rocket is not an impressive achievement when compared with what had been achieved in space and in general. It's a party trick meant to impress people who have never heard of Control Theory and who don't really know how hard it was to land a man on the Moon with early 1960's technology, or land the Curiosity rover on Mars or pick up Voyager's signal from the edge of the solar system decades after its launch, now that's an achievement!
The Space Shuttle landing is magnitudes more impressive and the error margin is magnitudes less than landing a spent rocket on a drone ship and yet every single landing of the Shuttle was a success, something that can't be said for the Falcon 9 rockets.
If it is not hard then why hasn't other launch providers done it before? Well the answer is very simple because they would bundle multiple payloads together and use all the fuel to put all of them into orbit, without extra fuel they can't land the rockets and they ditch them into the ocean. In reality this party trick has been done years before and Blue Origin did it after SpaceX and foreign competitors have said they will do the same because vertically landing rockets is not actually “rocket science” and SpaceX has no patent on it to prevent everyone else from doing it.
When the payload is too big or there are multiple of them leaving no extra fuel, for landing the rockets, SpaceX is more than happy to ditch them into the ocean. We have no way of knowing if recovering the boosters and re-using them is more commercially profitable than bundling payloads to make maximum use of the rocket, as all other commercial launch providers seem to do.
I know of no instance when SpaceX deliberately divided the payloads to recover the rocket. The Dragon launches at about 4,200 kg and so there remains extra fuel to land and “save” money, but NASA is actually paying an average of $191 million per launch (see IG report last section) so I am not sure if the eventual saving after costing landing, recovery and refurbishment is worthwhile, but of course we can't know for sure.
In Summary: Landing rockets is a party trick to impress simple people. There is no evidence that recovering and reusing rockets is commercially profitable on the long run. Recovering rockets is only possible if the rocket launch capability was not utilized to the maximum.

The Future

Government Contracts: US participation in ISS is guaranteed to 2024, so resupply contracts to SpaceX (and Orbital ATK) should continue until then. SpaceX has become a regular in launching NASA satellites and probes and this should continue, they also broke ULA's 10 year monopoly of military launch contracts when they launched, in 2016, a GPS satellite.
Days after NASA announced a shift from a human journey to Mars to concentrate on the Moon SpaceX would similarly announce the scaling down of the Mars lander development and concentration on a possible Moon missions (as ArsTechnica puts it: Musk revises his Mars ambitions, and they seem a little bit more real). In my opinion and it is impossible to know for sure: SpaceX was repeating its Dragon gambit, it was positioning itself to receive the eventual NASA contracts and it had no serious intention of self-financing a Mars mission (a burden that eventually proved too high even for NASA's budget to bear). Once NASA changed its goal, so did SpaceX follow suit.
New Rockets: The Falcon Heavy a Falcon 9 rocket with two first stages strapped to the side is the next iteration in the Falcon family. SpaceX successfully launched it in February 2018 with a dummy payload and it's scheduled to launch again in October as a certification process for the US Air Force but also with secondary payloads. The dummy payload was about 1,300 kg while the second launch will have a 5,000 kg ballast mass to certify the rocket's capability (source), so real success is the second launch and not the silly spectacle of a car in orbit.
The second rocket, the BFR, in development at SpaceX is a bigger more powerful rocket than the mighty Saturn V (!) using a new engine named Raptor fueled by liquid methane (natural gas). While Saturn V first stage had 5 rockets the BFR has 31 Raptor engines in its first stage! The Media reports that is fully funded by SpaceX, but at least the Raptor is being co-funded by the military.
Competitors: competition is the biggest headwind facing SpaceX. In the sector of government launch contracts SpaceX is the competition to the established ULA who are currently developing a new rocket and starting to improve their public image realizing at last that the general public is the real customer and not the bureaucrats in the Pentagon or NASA.
In the sector of ISS resupply SpaceX was always one of two companies, unfortunately Orbital ATK never played the PR game and so while a lot of people know about and follow the Dragon missions few seem to realize that Cygnus does the same supply missions (and other countries has been doing this mission for a long time), the company was recently acquired by Northrop Grumman so a change might be coming, either leave the sector or expand. A second competitor is on the horizon with a spacecraft named: Dream Chaser, with the look of a miniature Space Shuttle; that should get people to post tweets about it!
In the sector of commercial launches the competition is red hot from inside and outside the US, both by government funded launchers and new commercial companies. SpaceX breached the walls of orbit launching and proved that a private company (with generous funding from the government) can supply commercial launches (whether it can do it profitably is still an open question) but just like Tesla this heroic gamble opened the doors to many others who gladly followed in its path. Europe, Russia, China and India who seemed at the end of the 2010's to dominate the commercial launch sector to the exclusion of the US has seen their market share decline and they have stepped up their efforts and are determined to capture their share from the market by hook or crook.
Blue Origin is shaping up to be a major player in exactly the same sector that SpaceX now seem to rule. The company is financed by Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos to the tune of $1 billion per year and planing on being both an engine supplier and a rocket company; it will put tremendous pressure on SpaceX directly and help other companies transition from their dependency on Russian engines (which has to be regularly exempted from ongoing sanctions and thus represent a high risk). They are developing a new liquid methane (which has more power than kerosene but is less cumbersome than liquid hydrogen) engine: the BE-4, co-developed by ULA for their new rocket.
Aerojet Rocketdyne a major US rocket engine supplier, which is supplying NASA with new RS-25 engines for their SLS rocket, is currently developing AR-1 a new kerosene engine. This will also help SpaceX competitors wean themselves off the Russians engines. The Merlin is not going to be the only US made kerosene engine for long.
Profitability : SpaceX is a private company so we have no idea if they are making or losing money on every launch, whether they are making money on the government contract and subsidizing the commercial launches or visa versa. We have no idea if they are making enough to invest in new engines and rockets or if they have to raise funds and/or borrow money. As to the claims of profitability by the COO, that's just PR and US courts have clearly ruled PR to be protected under the 1st amendment and so they can claim anything they want as long as they are not selling anything (including shares in the company) based on those claims. With all due respect to Shotwell I believe she is talking about each individual launch being profitable thanks to NASA paying for the development costs, which is a government contractor kind of profitable and not as the Media sells it, i.e. as a “private” company kind of profitable, but I could be wrong and they might be highly profitable.
Funding: According to Forbes in early April 2018 “SpaceX authorized a $507 million round of Series I funding...priced at $169 per share, this round would bring SpaceX's total valuation to $25 billion.” They were not able to raise that according to what has been reported (also see CrunchBase link above): “SpaceX says it’s brought in $214 million so far, less than two weeks after the round opened. That leaves $286 million yet to be sold.”
The question that has to be asked is why a 16 year old company that has a regular ISS supply contract with NASA, a major share of the world's commercial launches needs to raise so much money? Clearly their profits (if they are making any) is not enough to fund the new rockets/engines or they need to expand more than what they can organically fund. For now the valuation is great and there is lots of money to fund SpaceX, but as we have seen in 2008 market conditions might change rapidly and funding dry up overnight.
In Summary: SpaceX is enjoying a leading position in the commercial launch sector, it has ISS resupply contracts to at least 2024, but because of its private nature we have no idea about its financial position. Competition in all sectors is heating up and major players are starting to challenge SpaceX lead.

Conclusion

The United State is the world's greatest economic power and with a few billion dollars it propelled SpaceX from a company on the verge of bankruptcy to the world's leading commercial rocket launch provider, impressive achievement but nothing compared to how it expanded its armament industry in WWI or WWII or how it regained the lead in the space race and achieved its greatest achievement: landing a man on the Moon. in comparison SpaceX is a run-of-the-mill commercial rocket launch provider that might be or might be not profitable.
SpaceX is an important part of keeping ISS supplied, of providing launch capability for NASA and the Pentagon and for competing in the commercial rocket launch sector and for the foreseeable future if anything should happen to disrupt its operations the US government has the authority, the deep pockets and is more than willing to intervene and firewall SpaceX to protect it from any turmoil.
Any question/comment/correction would be more than welcome, thank you!

2018.02.12 14:43 Sannyrk Embermine (MBRS) Announcements

I don't think I've read these updates on this subreddit yet so I am just posting what has been announced on their Telegram group.
Update #1: Airdrops
The Airdrops related to MBRS Only, AURA, COBU, and the other Embermine Ecosystem tokens being delivered to those networks was supposed to begin but was delayed due to a Dropbox migration issue rendering my snapshots inaccessible for the past week. It is hard to explain, but its roots are in the hack in October when we had to switch to a completely new account to manage our core files. We finally got it sorted out just in time for these drops to coincide with the announcements that are yet to come.
There were considerable issues with many users because of problems with both Cryptopia and EtheerDelta holding funds or preventing the withdrawal of the tokens in time for the snapshots. Now, additionally, the AURA network has grown significantly during that time and many people asked for another chance at the snapshots. What I am about to propose makes more sense once you all know what else is in store, but my suggestion is that we retake the snapshots. ALL of them. At the same time. But I will not dispose of the old snapshots, I will use them too. I will give each address the benefit of the doubt and use the HIGHEST total from either date to determine the amount of each token to receive.
Yes, I know that means that some people will get tokens that they "did not earn" depending upon your perspective. But seeing as I am giving away about $20 million in tokens over the next five days to the Embermine Community, I hope that some of you will forgive me.
The snapshot of MBRS holders will take place on Wednesday at Noon Central USA Time (it is 5:00pm Central USA Time on Sunday now)
Update #2 Token Balances:
Between now and Wednesday, we will be working furiously to get ensure that everyone has the MBRS and other Ecosystem tokens that they deserve and earned from giveaways, contests, and other agreements that have not been completed. The idea is that on Wednesday at Noon CST, the maximum number of possible users for MBRS will be realized and all of them will be captured on the snapshot of the MBRS holders.
Update #3 AURA Airdrop Ratios
Due to some changes in the original anticipated supply and size of the AURA community and tokens, I have updated the ratio that will be dropped on everyone for all tokens to better reflect the ratios between each network and maximize all of the drops for all users. Before we required a minimum of 1000, and that led to some people partioning into 1000 unit addresses. That showed me that people, regardless of what you do, will always angle for advantage if they can. Given the fact that I am going to use the other snapshots to compare information, and give the benefit to the highest total at each address, I figure that those who pushed 1000 tokens into a bunch of addresses either have not moved them, continue to use them, or they are gone entirely, so I have changed the AURA tokens ratio:
AURA Tokens delivered to holders: (Always rounding down) Snapshots taken of MBRS, TOV, DOM, IDEA, SLIP, and KNOW on Wednesday, February 14th, 2018 at 12:00pm Central USA Time. Do NOT wait until the last minute and do not try to move the tokens out at 12:01pm PLEASE because those extra two or three minutes should not make any difference if it means that you may get lost or miss out entirely.
MBRS 100:1 TOV 200:1 SLIP 200:1 IDEA 200:1 KNOW 400:1 DOM 10,000:1
So if you have 54,132 MBRS you will receive 541 AURA tokens. If you have 213,456 KNOW tokens, you will receive 533 AURA tokens. If you have 4,234,094 DOM you will receive 423 AURA tokens.
The delivery of all Aura tokens to MBRS-ecosystem holders will commence immediately after the snapshots are completed.
Update #4: COBU Drop
The COBU drop will happen using the same snapshots as the AURA tokens and using the same methodology and timing but with these ratios:
MBRS: 1:1 TOV: 2:1 SLIP: 2:1 IDEA 2:1 KNOW 4:1 DOM 100:1
So if you have 1,237,452 MBRS you will receive 1,237,452 COBU tokens If you have 1,623,400 KNOW tokens you will receive 405,850 COBU
The delivery of COBU will commence immediately after the AURA drop is completed.
Update #5: Upcoming partnership: Manatt Digital
We have received, and intend to accept, an offer letter for representation from Manatt Digtial, a law firm in Los Angeles:
https://www.manatt.com/Manatt-Digital
They will assist our lead counsel, Mike Ecternacht, in the design, development, and execution of our ongoing realtionships with various creative content developers, content providers, and of course, the creation and development of our smart contract engine, which is the heart of the Techne protocol.
This is a huge thing for us because they have not only the experience, but also the connections throughout the areas of industry that we require to be not only competitive in this marketplace, but also to assist us in building relationships with the wide variety of organizations we will need to partner with in the future. We are wading into shark-infested waters and we need experienced shark wranglers. We will not need a bigger boat with these guys on our side! We are very excited about this relationship.
Update #6: Akyumen Technologies: Our own dedicated hardware platform
We have reached an agreement of terms on a royalty-free software license agreement with innovative mobile platform: Akyumen Technologies. After several years of development and overcoming a slew of individual technological challenges, Akyumen's Hawk is finally ready for manufacture and distribution.
https://www.akyumen.com/default-item/hawk/
There are several unique pieces to this mobile technology that makes it not only amazing, but also uniquely suited to host the Embermine Platform, along with each User's Personal Data Chain (PDC), which is the means by which individuals can maintain and access your own data relative to the Techne Distributed Ledger. (more details regarding PDCs and Techne coming)
Here are just some of the features:
1) Projector. The most apparent and obvious element that is different on this phone is the embedded 35 lumen projector that completely changes the game when it comes to sharing and showing information or content on your phone. No more crowding around a small screen, instead, you can project an high definition image up to 100" wide onto any screen, wall, or even the ceiling. I have HELD this tech in my hands myself and have used it myself. No heat, pixelzation, slowdown, or interference.
2) Dedicated encrypted storage. The unit has native dual-boot capability and seperate dedicated storage areas to keep your PDC and your standard phone systems in seperate encrypted areas for added security.
3) Android-based: The Akyumen Hawk is Android-based for ultimate development flexibility.
4) Secure Hardware Wallet. The Akyumen Hawk upon the release of the Embermine Platform upon it, will also function as a secure hardware wallet, with native compatibility with all Embermine Ecosystem tokens, as well as balance query, P2P secure transfers (using DomainToken) and more.
5) Native Embermine integration. All of Embermine's products, apps, and tokens will operate natively upon the phone. For example, DomainToken can be used in its natural form, enabling direct, secure connectivity to all of your data, communication, financial, and social network channels. And with DomainToken, one can easily switch "Entities" while using the phone, enabling it to be the Nexus of all your buisiness and networking channels. This level of integration is only possible because of the unique features of the phone and their decision to build their phone to suit our unique requirements.
6) Free phones? That is right. Akyumen is launching their own token (AKYU) tonight (details coming). One token is required to "register" your phone to the network. But Akyumen hardware can only be purchased with AKYU tokens. And you can earn AKYU tokens simply from conducting various activities and using your phone as you normally would. the rate earned on average over 2 years would be enough to upgrade to the newest version of a phone. The amount of the phone is still being finalized, but our current estimates are in the 500-700 AKYU per phone, the final amount will be announced sometime in the next couple of weeks.
7) Content Networks. A deal is currently being finalized to bring various content networks to the phone natively, The addition of the projector makes movies and other video events a group event and a snap to do.
There is so much more to tell, including their table and Holophone products, but so much more will be discussed about this directly. Much of the website and the other content is still being prepared with the latest information, as it has been a project that has been in development for several years.
There is a small beta release (without the Embermine Platform) in April, and a worldwide release (without the full Embermine Platform) on July 1st.

7: The Embermine Timeline

this is not the FULL exhaustive timeline, but the one that we will offer for the time being. We will provide more details as we move along but here is the current development/release timeline for Embermine:
February 12th: Akyumen (AKYU) token release. Will be dropped to MBRS holders using the Wednesday snapshot. These drops will occur along with the AURA and COBU drops and ONLY to MBRS holders. Ratio: 20:1 (Total of 2.5 million dropped) March 1st, 2018: Full scale development begins on the Embermine Platform, Techne, and Akyumen Integration June 7th - 10th: The 1st Annual Embermine Users Conference in Lincoln, NE (more on this in a bit) July 1, 2018: Worldwide launch and release of Akyumen Hawk without the full Embermine Platform August 1st, 2018: Target release of the Embermine Platform beta and testnet for Techne. Initial integration with Hawk and basic functionality completed. October 15th, 2018: Target release of Embermine Platform MVP and Techne Mainnet. Full intergration with Akyumen Hawk complete.
Update #8: Lampix
As many of you know, I have been working as an advisor for Lampix since the company's inception and I have waited a long time for that to come full circle. Now, almost a year later, I am happy to say that we are negotiating the final terms with Lampix for them to work on developing their technology for the Akyumen Corp line of products, enabling such cool elements such as interactivtivty with the projector display for everything from games to presentations. James Drake, [12.02.18 14:05] The initial integration of Lampix will allow the phone, when it is in the cradle in presentation mode, to project a custom typing/mousing interface "behind" the phone, allowing the user to work and navigate on the phone without holding it, jarring the image, or interfere with the ongoing presentation
James Drake, [12.02.18 14:07] But the ultimate idea is that with a small portable FOLDABLE screen that can fit in you pocket, you have a monitor that does not require power, with Lampix intergration to make it a touch screen and with a programable type and mousing interface that is custom to the application being used on the phone.
James Drake, [12.02.18 14:07] All of it running just off the power of the phone and its power source. James Drake, [12.02.18 14:11] Before I move on to the next big update, I would like to openly address a couple of things:
1) This is a software license for Akyumen Corp to have full access to our technology and us, theirs for testing and development purposes. This does not mean that it is dedicated to ONLY that platfrom.
2) We will launch on all platforms simultaneously, although the Hawk users will likely get most updates the fastest due to the system's integration with our product. James Drake, [12.02.18 14:14] 3) We are VERY aware of some of the "bad press" that exists out there about Aasim, the CEO of Akyumen. In fact the only reason why we have not announced this arrangement a couple of weeks ago was to allow a full due diligence on the technology and these "claims" from a former disgruntled employee, and others trying to discredit their tech. But it is an amazing thing to hold something in your hands that actually works, and then see your own tech rip the demo apart and actually look at the chipset, and the unique nano tech involved to make it work.
James Drake, [12.02.18 14:22] The important take away is that for years, Aasim (pronounced as "AWESOME, which is awesome BTW) was stuck between deciding to SELL his tech, or build and distribute it. In the dog-eat-dog world of technology, nothing is sacred. We vetted this out as completely as can be completed reasonably. The only thing that remains is to get the product to full manufacturing and distribution. It currently is being rated by AT&T for use on their network, and we will begin helping Akyumen get the it rated on others.
Okay, moving on!
Update #9: Establishment of the Firestarter Initiative with The Art of Elysium
During the Sundance Film Festival, we sponsored the ChefDance dinner supporting The Art of Elysium, and philanthropy project in Los Angeles. Their mission: "We believe in using art as a catalyst for social change. Our “full circle” approach engages emerging artists in inspiring acts of service that forge opportunities for them to share their creativity in diverse and meaningful ways with individuals of need. We support and acknowledge our volunteer artists by providing platforms to showcase their art within the community."
The synergy between projects is not only obvious, but also important. Not only will we be involved in helping them use the Embermine Platform to manage and empower their mission, but we have also provided the seed funds for what we hope will be the single largest endowment for the arts and creativty ever created. The Firestarter Initiative is the philanthropic arm of Embermine, engaged in helping use the power of creativity to engage in everything from projects like The Art of Elysium to urban or building revitalization projects, like the ones we are currently evaluating in Lincoln, Minneapolis, and Detroit.
Our first Firestarter Grant has been given to The Art of Elysium: 2,000,000 MBRS, 4,000,000 TOV, and 4,000,000 SLIP. These were funds that we were able to secure through a combination of our partners, top holders, and most of all, Ryan Colby of TokenFest, the original founder of DomainToken. Those tokens will also benefit from the token drops that will happen to those systems, ensuring growth and funding for many many years to come.
Update #10: Sanyika Street
We have worked out an agreement with the amazing Sanyika Street to be the "voice" of the Embermine project. He has agreed to use "If you are an Artist" as a piece for introducing the world to Embermine and our projects, especially the Art of Elysium. Here is a live cut of what he did for us at Sundance: https://youtu.be/sWz-0ckXgow?t=464
#11: NIO and AURA drops:
So the end result of all of this is that our collective networks are going to be growing. Once the drops to our networks are finished, we will be taking a snapshot fo the Aura and NIO holders on Wednesday, February 21st, 2018 at Noon Central Standard Time.
Immediately afterward, we will conduct drops of the following tokens to those networks:
AURA holders will receive:
MBRS: 1 per 1000 AURA TOV: 2 per 1000 AURA IDEA: 2 per 1000 AURA SLIP: 2 per 1000 AURA KNOW: 4 per 1000 AURA DOM: 100 per 1000 AURA COBU: 2 per 1000 AURA AKYU: 2 per 1000 AURA
NIO Holders will receive:
AURA: 1 per 1000 NIO COBU: 1 per 1 NIO AKYU: 2 per 1000 NIO
These distributions will begin immediately after the snapshot has been taken and will follow the same guidelines and requirements of all of the other token drops. These are not HUGE drops, but there will help bring some more people into the fold, and seeing as our networks will already be mingled at that point, it will give a few MBRS holders a nice little bonus.

2018.01.19 11:12 madazzahatter Mayor Caldwell announced City and County of Honolulu has been selected as one of five new cities to participate in Bloomberg Philanthropies’ national What Work Cities initiative – one of the largest-ever philanthropic efforts to enhance the use of data and evidence in the public sector.

01/17/2018 HONOLULU SELECTED TO JOIN NATIONAL WHAT WORKS CITIES INITIATIVE
Honolulu selected to join national What Works Cities initiative
Joins 99 other cities committed to making city government more effective using data and evidence
Today, Mayor Kirk Caldwell announced that the City and County of Honolulu has been selected as one of five new cities to participate in Bloomberg Philanthropies’ national What Work Cities initiative – one of the largest-ever philanthropic efforts to enhance the use of data and evidence in the public sector. Honolulu will receive technical assistance from world-class experts to build our capacity to address local issues using data and evidence.
“On an island of just 600 square miles and nearly one million residents in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, it is to our great advantage to embrace all that technology has to offer in order to achieve the most efficient results,” said Mayor Caldwell. “Whether it’s providing city services such as driver license renewals and car registrations, to trash pick-up and zero-based budgeting, the City and County of Honolulu has embraced data-driven results so that we create less of a burden on our taxpayers. I want to thank Michael Bloomberg for his vision in creating the What Works Cities network.”
Honolulu’s selection, along with that of Columbia, South Carolina, Grand Rapids, Michigan, Irving, Texas, and Long Beach, California was announced today by What Works Cities and Results for America, one of the initiative’s five partner organizations and the campaign manager.
“When cities know how to put data at the core of their decision-making, they’re equipped with the tools to best solve local challenges and serve their communities,” said Simone Brody, Executive Director of What Works Cities. “We’re excited to welcome these five cities and very proud to reach our goal of working with 100 cities across the United States.”
With today’s new participating cities, What Works Cities is now partnering with 100 cities that are home to more than 31 million residents and have annual budgets exceeding $104 billion.
“Networking with other mayors and experts across the country is one of the many benefits of being named a member of the What Works Cities initiative, and the City and County of Honolulu plans to take full advantage of the opportunities that are available,” added Mayor Caldwell. “We want to learn more about what delivers proven results and take advantage of the experience of other municipalities on a variety of issues.”
With support from a consortium of expert partners, cities participating in the What Works initiative are identifying more effective ways to evaluate programs and improve performance; optimize resources to serve their communities; and address a range of social challenges – from public safety to affordable housing. What Works Cities participants also join the initiative’s extensive learning network of local leaders and global experts actively sharing best practices for outcomes-focused governance.
The mission of the Honolulu What Works Cities Workgroup is to develop a data management framework and governance process for departments across the City and County of Honolulu to better source, manage, and analyze data to inform key stakeholders, improve decision making, and effectively deliver services to the community. To lay the foundation for this work, the workgroup will undertake a focused project on the topic of chronically homeless persons to demonstrate the potential for this work, and the methods by which it can be achieved.
In addition, Honolulu’s Data Governance mission within the What Works Cities Workgroup is to ensure that the highest quality data are collected, used and made available to key stakeholders through coordinated efforts for the purpose of improving efficiency, protecting privacy and enabling better decision making by the administration and policymakers for the benefit of the citizens of the City and County of Honolulu.
The consortium of expert organizations assembled by Bloomberg Philanthropies to deliver support to cities comprises the Behavioral Insights Team, the Center for Government Excellence at Johns Hopkins University, the Government Performance Lab at the Harvard Kennedy School, Results for America and the Sunlight Foundation.
The five new cities joining What Works Cities today follow 95 cities already participating in the initiative, including: Albuquerque, NM; Anchorage, AK; Arlington, TX; Athens, GA; Augusta, GA; Baltimore, MD; Baton Rouge, LA; Birmingham, AL; Boise, ID; Boulder, CO; Buffalo, NY; Bellevue, WA; Boston, MA; Cambridge, MA; Cape Coral, FL; Cary, NC; Charleston, SC; Chattanooga, TN; Charlotte, NC; Columbia, SC; Corona, CA; Denton, TX; Denver, CO; Des Moines, IA; Downey, CA; Durham, NC; Fargo, ND; Fayetteville, NC; Fort Collins, CO; Fort Lauderdale, FL; Fort Worth, TX; Gilbert, AZ; Glendale, AZ; Grand Rapids, MI; Greensboro, NC; Gresham, OR; Hartford, CT; Hayward, CA; Independence, MO; Indianapolis, IN; Irving, Texas; Jackson, MS; Kansas City, KS; Kansas City, MO; Knoxville, TN; Laredo, TX; Las Vegas, NV; Lewisville, TX; Lexington, KY; Lincoln, NE; Little Rock, AR; Long Beach, CA; Louisville, KY; Madison, WI; Memphis, TN; Mesa, AZ; Miami, FL; Milwaukee, WI; Minneapolis, MN; Modesto, CA; Naperville, IL; Nashville, TN; New Haven, CT; New Orleans, LA; Norfolk, VA; Oklahoma City, OK; Olathe, KS; Orlando, FL; Portland, OR; Providence, RI; Raleigh, NC; Rancho Cucamonga, CA; Riverside, CA; Salinas, CA; Salt Lake City, UT; San Francisco, CA; San Jose, CA; Seattle, WA; Scottsdale, AZ; Saint Paul, MN; Sioux Falls, SD; South Bend, IN; Syracuse, NY; Tacoma, WA; Tempe, AZ; Topeka, KS; Tulsa, OK; Tyler, TX; Victorville, CA; Virginia Beach, VA; Waco, TX; Washington, DC; West Palm Beach, FL; Wichita, KS; and Winston-Salem, NC.

Sorry. I posted and then immediately deleted because I saw I fudged up the title. Then when I reposted it, auto-mod ate it or something. Speaking of the title...
Trying a new experiment. How do we feel about the added info in the title? Keep doing it or go back to just the date?
  • The combined Monday night audience for WWF and WCW set another all-time viewership record this week, each coming off major newsworthy shows. Over 6 million homes were watching wrestling that night. Raw featured Mike Tyson joining DX in a good angle, and Tyson seemed to be having the time of his life, but the angle got almost no mainstream publicity. It seems the sports media has already lost interest in the Tyson/wrestling connection, which doesn't bode well for Wrestlemania. Shawn Michaels, who supposedly has a severe back injury, was bouncing around the ring and looked perfectly fine and even gave Austin a superkick at one point, although he didn't actually wrestle. Raw also featured the return of the Undertaker to set up his match with Kane at Wrestlemania. Meanwhile, WCW featured Sting and Savage tagging together in the first ever WCW/NWO team-up, plus Bret Hart's return to the ring for the first time in 4 months, both of which were greeted with a surprisingly tame reaction, compared to the nuclear hot crowd WWF had.

  • ECW's 4th ever PPV Living Dangerously is in the books. It took place in front of a sellout crowd of 3,700 people. The show was decent, some good, some bad. It showed that ECW doesn't have enough talented in-ring guys to compete with a WCW PPV, or the star-power and production value to compete with a WWF PPV. But if you're an ECW fan, it was definitely entertaining and creative, although if you're not already an ECW fan, it probably didn't do much to convert anybody and aside from a little more blood, it didn't offer anything you can't get from a WWF show.
  • Other notes from Living Dangerously: RVD vs. Too Cold Scorpio was hyped up like they expected it to be a classic, but it was actually a pretty bad match that went for way too long. Dave says RVD is a great athlete with a great look but he's somewhat overrated by his hardcore fans, who act like he's the second coming of Shawn Michaels. Jenna Jameson (wearing more than Sable usually does on Raw) made another appearance, making out with Tommy Dreamer. The Taz/Bigelow match ended with them going through a hole in the ring, which was a creative spot. A pre-taped Sabu/Sandman match was aired in order to "buy time" to fix the ring. The match was pre-taped because they were afraid it would be as bad as their last match so they wanted to be able to edit it before it aired. They played it up as though the match was banned from airing because it was so violent but in reality, there was nothing particularly different about it from any other ECW match. As for the main event, they never fixed the ring and it hurt the quality of the main event. Sid Vicious was originally supposed to be Lance Storm's mystery partner, but the negotiations fell apart and it didn't end up happening.

  • A lot of news came out of the TSN show Off The Record which featured Vince McMahon last week. The show aired 2 segments on back-to-back nights. The first one, Dave covered last week but the 2nd show came after last week's press time so Dave covers it here. Dave mentions some other stuff he didn't mention from the first show, where McMahon talked about not believing in giving creative control clauses to wrestlers, pointing out the problems they lead to in WCW. But he admitted that Bret did have a clause for "reasonable" creative control in his contract for his last 30 days. Whether Bret's refusal to go along with McMahon's plans leading up to Survivor Series can be considered "reasonable" or not is up for debate, but Vince felt it wasn't and claims that by refusing, Bret was in breach of his contract. When discussing the content of WWF, Vince said he didn't think anything should be off-limits other than guns, knives, rape, and robbery. Dave points out that the gun and rape things were already portrayed, both by Brian Pillman (Austin/gun angle and the Pillman/Marlena angle right before his death). Vince also said that "two guys in their underwear wrestling around is awfully boring."
  • On the second episode of Off The Record that McMahon appeared on, they talked about WCW and Vince claimed Nitro has higher ratings because it's the most heavily promoted TV show in history and owned by the conglomerate that promotes it, which Dave says is a ridiculous statement. Vince also said that Ted Turner has never had an original idea in his life but is good at copying other people's ideas. When asked if he had any regrets about Hogan, Hall, and Nash leaving, Vince said no to Hogan but admitted that he might have some when it comes to Hall and Nash. He said he would take back Hogan on the right terms but he definitely wouldn't get into a bidding war with Turner for him. When asked if WCW's dominance over WWF was karma for the way Vince put the territories out of business, Vince said they put themselves out of business and argues that he was just a young kid trying to compete with a bunch of rich older promoters. Dave scoffs at that shit and talks about a show he attended many years ago where the NWA president Bob Geigel, who was running the Kansas City territory at the time, was in t-shirt and jeans with a plunger trying to fix a toilet at the arena before a show, while Vince was in his suit and tie and jetsetting around the country, buying TV time slots away from struggling promotions. Anyway, in the interview, McMahon also talked about the possibility of taking the company public some day, although he talked as if it was a long way in the future. He also claimed that, aside from TV ratings, the WWF "is kicking Ted Turner's ass." When asked if he regretted the Melanie Pillman interview 24 hours after Brian died, Vince said no. "I don't regret that whatsoever. The purpose for having Melanie on was because at the time Brian Pillman was a real free spirit. Brian Pillman was known from time to time to use recreational drugs, and it was thought at the time by his wife, that was one of the reasons why he died. So I gave her the forum to say, maybe everyone can learn from this, maybe everyone can benefit from this tragedy. And that is why we had Melanie on, to be able to say that about Brian. As it turned out, he had a heart attack and a defective heart."
  • Finally, Vince was asked to play word association, where the host named some names and Vince gave his thoughts:
Ultimate Warrior: "Lunatic."
Eric Bischoff: "Don't know him that well. From his reputation, not a nice man."
Hulk Hogan: "Not as big as he thinks he is."
Bruno Sammartino: "A confused individual suffering from dementia, but one with a great reputation."
Rick Rude: "Someone who would like to be in this era performing with the greats, but can't.
Jesse Ventura: "Overrated at the time, and still is confused about his place in the history of the WWF."
Kevin Nash: "A very fortunate individual that someone finally saw the talent and gave him the opportunity to be somebody."
Vince McMahon: "The luckiest man on Earth. I've got it all. A wonderful family, the privilege of being in a company and doing what I love which is entertaining people. It's the biggest thrill of my life, apart from my family.
  • Dave says Vince's comments about Sammartino are interesting because recently, there has been an attempt to try to bury the hatchet with Sammartino, with some in the company reaching out to him through third parties. In fact, in an interview recently, Sammartino seemed to be leaning towards Vince's side when discussing the Montreal incident. Vince and Bruno haven't actually spoken since 1992 on the Phil Donahue show, which Dave was also on (he mentions that the reason he was seated next to McMahon on the show is because Bruno had originally been seated there, but backstage he openly claimed he didn't know if he could control himself and not punch Vince's lights out, so producers put him on the opposite side of the stage and put Dave next to Vince instead).
  • The future of Promo Azteca in Mexico and the situation with the Mexican wrestlers in WCW seems to be up in the air. Representatives from WCW and Promo Azteca met to discuss the possibility of airing Promo Azteca shows in the U.S. Negotiations went poorly and it eventually ended with WCW sending Konnan a letter saying that he and every other Mexican wrestler in WCW is under exclusive contract to WCW and can't wrestle anywhere else, including Mexico. Konnan was also told that he can no longer book for Azteca. This is obviously crippling to Promo Azteca, since nearly their entire roster is contracted to WCW. And it seems WCW has the right to do this. The contracts state that when signing with WCW, these wrestlers would be exclusive to them, but WCW was basically letting them work in Mexico simply out of the kindness of their heart, but they could pull them at any time and now they have. The Mexican wrestlers are said to be extremely pissed about it because even though they make more money in WCW, they're treated as jobbers for the most part, but they're headliners in Mexico and now they're not allowed to work in their home country.
  • An upcoming Nitro in Minneapolis sold out in 5 hours, making it the most impressive first-day sales in WCW history. They sold nearly 15,000 tickets for the show. Then the next day, tickets for an upcoming Nitro in Louisville went on sale and also sold out in less than 5 hours, for another near-14,000 tickets. It pretty much destroyed every wrestling ticket and gate record in the city's history. Even by the current standards of how hot the wrestling business is, this is insane and Dave says the demand for Nitro tickets these days is more like the demand for major concert tickets.
  • WWC women's champion La Tigresa in Puerto Rico was arrested last month for being part of a gang that traffics heroin and cocaine in a local prison. Four undercover police purchased around $400,000 worth of drugs from the group and then arrested La Tigresa, her boyfriend, her mother, and someone else on drug charges.
  • In AAA, they're looking at bringing in former WCW jobber Barry Houston and giving him a male stripper gimmick. They want to put him in a tag team with Black Magic (Norman Smiley) with the gimmick being that Black Magic would act like his pimp (doesn't seem to have ever happened).
  • Juventud Guerrera worked some shows in Mexico last week while still wearing his mask. He cut a promo explaining it by saying he went into hostile territory (the U.S.) and the promotion (WCW) "stole" his mask. Since the mask is licensed in Mexico (whatever that means) and he lost the mask outside of the licensed territory, the wrestling commission allowed that to stand and he's still allowed to wear his mask in Mexico. But of course, given the new situation with WCW preventing contracted wrestlers from working in Mexico, he might not be back any time soon.
  • There's a lot of rumors that the working relationship between NJPW and WCW is coming to an end, as they apparently don't have any WCW wrestlers booked after May.
  • There's a little more on the recent situation with Sunny cancelling an appearance for Dennis Coraluzzo and appearing at an ECW show the same night instead. As you'd imagine, Coraluzzo was none too pleased and complained that a local sponsor had helped fund the show mostly because Sunny was scheduled to appear. Coraluzzo wrote a letter to WWF threatening to sue. Coraluzzo actually knew a day in advance that Sunny wouldn't be there but he continued acting like she would be up until late in the show, when he finally announced to the live crowd that she wasn't going to be there. According to Sunny, WWF had given her a list of approved shows she could work, which included both the Coraluzzo show and the ECW show the same night. And for whatever reason, Coraluzzo was under the impression she was working his show, but Sunny claims she never agreed to it and wanted to work the ECW date instead. WWF sources dispute it and say that Sunny had agreed to work the Coraluzzo show but then backed out the day before because she thought it would cause heat with Paul Heyman (who, as covered before, fucking hates Dennis Coraluzzo). Sunny also had WWF approval to appear on ECW's PPV but they never approved her to appear on ECW TV the week before and they were upset about that. They don't mind Sunny working ECW house shows on her days off but if she's going to appear on their TV shows, they want to know about it beforehand.
  • Speaking of the Dennis Coraluzzo show, it was actually an Eddie Gilbert memorial show. And in typical Coraluzzo fashion, he cut a promo during the show trashing ECW and saying that Paul Heyman had backstabbed Eddie Gilbert and basically stole ECW from him back when Eddie was booking for ECW. Dave does admit there's some truth to the fact that Eddie Gilbert was booking the promotion and was basically forced out by Tod Gordon, who then handed over the booking to Paul Heyman. But during the Eddie Gilbert days, ECW was deep in the red and would have gone out of business if Heyman hadn't come in and turned things around. On the same show, Sid Vicious worked and cut a promo talking about his recent no-shows. He claimed he no-showed an autograph show last month because they wanted him to pay his own way to fly in for it. And he say he no-showed Ian Rotten's IWA show because Rotten had called him and said the advance ticket sales were poor and not to bother coming, and then when he didn't show, Rotten went in the ring and cut a promo burying him.
  • An Atlanta newspaper recently reviewed Abdullah The Butcher's House of Ribs and Chinese Food restaurant. They praised the ribs but said the Chinese food was just average.
  • Newest gimmicks in Extremely Strange Wrestling: Natural Born Molestor, Karen Von Erich, Tyson the Cannibal, Disco Dragon, and The Rapist.
  • Stevie Richards will be undergoing throat surgery in 2 weeks and is expected to need at least 3 more surgeries after that one. All of this stems from the original neck surgery he had awhile back (if you ever wondered why he has such a raspy voice now, there ya go).
  • Dave says that ECW and the wrestlers deserve a ton of credit for the classy way they handled the death of Louie Spicolli. Sabu and RVD were pall bearers at the funeral, and Tommy Dreamer, Beulah, and Little Guido flew across country to attend the wake and then had to fly right back to work a show the next night, but they still made the trip. Paul Heyman allowed 2 of his biggest stars (RVD and Sabu) the night off for the funeral because they were so close to Spicolli. They also had a special trophy made honoring Spicolli in ECW and gave it to his family. They also had the 10-bell salute for Spicolli before a show and a they used the death valley driver on the PPV, which Joey Styles renamed the Spicolli Driver. Meanwhile, the company that Spicolli actually worked for when he died (WCW) and the company where he first became a known star (WWF) both did absolutely jack shit for him and no one from either company attended his funeral.
  • Chris Jericho and Eddie Guerrero teamed up for a match on Nitro and Dave says it's a shame that WCW doesn't care about tag teams anymore because if they put those 2 together as a real team, they would be the best team in America by a landslide. He says Jericho is basically doing the Art Barr Love Machine gimmick these days and nobody knows how to work with that better than Eddie Guerrero.
  • Disco Inferno had been using a version of the stone cold stunner as his finisher (calling it the chart buster) but now Ed Leslie has debuted as the newest member of the NWO and used the move as his finisher. Turns out WCW has told Disco Inferno not to use the move anymore because Hogan has insisted that the stunner be reserved for Leslie to use.
  • A lot of people backstage were mad at Steven Regal for his match with Goldberg a couple of weeks back, where he basically sandbagged him and did some shooting on Goldberg in the match. But contrary to rumors, Regal hasn't been fired.
  • On this week's WCW Thunder episode, they announced that WCW was no longer going to enforce the over-the-top-rope disqualification rule that has been a staple of WCW for years. In reality, they hadn't acknowledged or enforced that on TV for a long time now, but a couple of weeks ago on Raw, WWF made fun of the rule during the Jim Cornette NWA angle and apparently it touched a nerve because WCW is now doing away with it officially.
  • More crowd trouble at a Lincoln, NE show for WCW. Chris Jericho was doing the normal cheap heat stuff of insulting the city and the Cornhuskers football team and it led to the crowd getting out of control and throwing stuff. Several fans were injured and 30 police had to come out and quell the crowd. WCW security later said it was the most misbehaved crowd ever at a WCW event.
  • The original plan for the upcoming New Age Outlaws vs. Cactus Jack/Chainsaw Charlie match at Wrestlemania was for it to be a barbed wire match. But WWF scrapped the idea when PPV provider Viewer's Choice made their objections known, so it will probably end up as some other gimmick match (yeah, a stupid dumpster match. And to think, we almost had a barbed wire match at a Wrestlemania).
  • Wrestlemania 15 next year is tentatively scheduled for Sky Dome in Toronto (nope, ended up being Philly).
  • WWF will be holding another training camp soon. Among the names expected to be there are a guy named Paulo Silva who is said to be a 7'5 former Brazillian basketball player (he later became Giant Silva in the Oddities). Word is he went to work out at Larry Sharpe's gym and when Sharpe saw him, he contacted WWF and they immediately signed him to a developmental deal as soon as they saw him (Vince's big man fetish strikes again). It's also expected that Erin O'Grady (Crash Holly) and Vic Grimes will attend the training camp also.
  • WWF is close to signing Mens Teioh, Dick Togo and Shoichi Funaki from Michinoku Pro (they would all briefly be members of Kaientai until the group was eventually wittled down to just Taka and Funaki).
  • In an Ottawa Sun newspaper interview, Vince McMahon trashed Ahmed Johnson, saying was always injured and that he often injured others. He also said that Ahmed couldn't separate his character and was basically the same guy outside the ring as he was in it. Ahmed had been pushed so hard as a big star for so long that it had gone to his head, but he lost steam because he was constantly hurt and because when he was around, he was a terrible worker and fans saw that.
  • More letters, more Bret Hart Screwjob discussion. Even 5 months later, it's still the hot topic. One guy points out that Davey Boy Smith got screwed over the most. WWF turned it into a storyline to make Vince heel, Bret got a lighter work schedule and a pay raise, Bischoff got to steal another WWF guy, Shawn Michaels got rid of his #1 enemy, Owen got a major pay raise to come back to work....Davey Boy Smith, meanwhile, had to pay WWF to get out of his contract and now he's in WCW feuding with Steve McMichael. A couple of other people write in, essentially calling bullshit on Shawn Michaels' alleged back injury and say he's just trying to get out of doing the job to Steve Austin at Wrestlemania.
FRIDAY: Backstage WCW turmoil, NJPW/WCW relationship falls apart, new Memphis wrestling promotion forming, and more...
